「どんな人か」を what kind of person ...、「重苦しい雰囲気」を the air between us feels heavy と節や文に開きます。最後は実際に意思疎通が完了したとは断定せず、begin to feel that ...、can imagine how easily ...

  • 「初対面の時」は when we meet someone for the first time と出来事にします
「どんな人か」は what kind of person they are と間接疑問の語順にします
  • 「一体」は疑問の強調ですが on earth は強すぎるため、do not know what kind ...

When we meet someone for the first time を条件にし、we do not know what kind of person they are を主節にします。what kind of person の後ろは疑問文の are they ではなく、間接疑問の they are です。

When we meet someone for the first time, we do not know what kind of person they are or how they may feel about us.

別解

At a first meeting, it is hard to tell what the other person is like and what they may be thinking.

At first face, we do not know what the other person is like.
When we meet someone for the first time, we do not know what they are like.

We do not know what kind of person our opponent is.
We do not know what kind of person the other person is.

We do not know what kind of person are they.
We do not know what kind of person they are.

when we meet someone for the first time出来事として最も明確です
at a first meeting簡潔な名詞表現です
at the first face英語にはない直訳なので使いません
what kind of person they are間接疑問の語順で書きます
what the other person is likewhat ... be like の定番形です
how is the other person疑問文語順で、性質を尋ねる形にもなっていません

The air between us somehow feels heavy とまず場の状態を述べ、and we are tense and at least a little worried と人の状態を続けます。

The air between us somehow feels heavy, and we are tense and at least a little worried.

別解

There is a rather uncomfortable silence between us, so we feel nervous and cannot completely free ourselves from worry.

We have a heavy atmosphere.
The air between us feels heavy.

We are exciting when we first meet.
We are tense when we first meet.

We are very worried at a first meeting.
We are at least a little worried at a first meeting.

we have a heavy atmosphere雰囲気を所有する不自然な形です
at least a little worried小さくても存在する不安を表します

  • 「笑い合う」は声を上げる laugh at each other ではなく smile at each other です
  • laugh at each other
  • 「それで」は笑顔だけをきっかけにするので just by doing so / then と受けます
「意思が通じ合えたような気」は事実の断定ではなく feel that we know what is in each other's mind とします
  • 「安心して」は with peace ではなく feel safe enough to talk または talk easily と結果で表します
  • 「話せそうに思えてくる」は begin to think that we may be able to talk と可能性と心の変化を残します

At such a time, if we can smile at each other と条件を置きます。結果は二段階で、we begin to feel that we know what is in each other's mind、and we begin to think that we may be able to talk easily after that です。 may be able to

At such a time, if we can smile at each other, we begin to feel that we know what is in each other's mind, and we begin to think that we may be able to talk easily after that.

別解

If we exchange a smile then, that alone can make us feel as if we know what is in each other's mind, and we may soon feel safe enough to start talking.

笑い合うを laugh at each other とする

If we laugh at each other, we feel better.
If we smile at each other, we feel better.

each other の前の at を落とす

We smile each other when we first meet.
We smile at each other when we first meet.

smile は相手を直接目的語に取らず、smile at each other とします。

A smile proves that we fully understand each other.
A smile makes us feel that we have understood each other.

We feel that each other's will has passed to us.
We feel that we understand what the other person wants to say.

After one smile, we can talk easily without any worry.
After one smile, we may feel that we can talk more easily.

without any も強すぎます。

smile at each other互いに笑顔を向ける基本形です
laugh at each other互いを笑いものにする意味になるため使いません
feel that we have understood what the other person means理解した感覚として what 節に開けます
feel as if we know what is in each other's mindas if
feel that we may be able to talk easily可能性と主観を丁寧に残します
can talk without any worry不安が完全に消えると強めるため使いません
begin to feel that ...
come to think that ...
know for sure that ...

When we meet someone for the first time, we do not know what kind of person they are or how they may feel about us. The air between us somehow feels heavy, and we are tense and at least a little worried. At such a time, if we can smile at each other, we begin to feel that we know what is in each other's mind, and we begin to think that we may be able to talk easily after that.

what kind of person they are と how they may feel で、初対面の未知を二つの節に開きました。最後も what is in each other's mind とし、「意思」を抽象名詞のまま置いていません。特に begin to feel と may be able to が重要です。 someone を受ける they は単数用法で、動詞は they are とします。

At a first meeting, it is hard to tell what the other person is like or what they think of us. We do not yet know how to act with them, so the silence feels heavy, and we are nervous and somewhat afraid. If we exchange a small smile, however, we may feel as if we already know what is in each other's mind. We then begin to see how we can talk without so much fear.

atmosphere や communicate が出ない場合を想定し、the silence feels heavy、know what is in each other's mind、talk without so much fear と具体的にしました。somewhat afraid で不安の小ささを残し、may feel as if で事実ではなく感覚だと示しています。

feel、seem、begin to feel、may be able to somehow、at least a little、feel that、may be able to
