Whether it rains too little or too much too little / too much

Whether it rains too little or too much, rain can cause trouble.

別解

Both too little rain and too much rain can cause serious problems.

Only when it does not rain at all can rain cause trouble.
Whether it rains too little or too much, rain can cause trouble.

too much rain を too many rain とする

Too many rain can cause trouble.
Too much rain can cause trouble.

Too little or too much rain always brings a disaster.
Too little or too much rain can cause trouble.

whether it rains too little or too much二つの極端を対称に置けます
both too little rain and too much rain名詞で簡潔に並べる形です
if it rains or not降りすぎる内容が消えるので使いません

  • 「時代」は In the days when ...
  • 「先の天気」は future weather の硬い名詞より what the weather would be like と開きます
「〜しかなかった」は only could ではなく had no choice but to が確実です

In the days when people did not even have a word for weather forecasts と時代を一つの節にし、主節を they had no choice but to decide ... 判断の目的語は what the weather would be like です。

In the days when people did not even have a word for weather forecasts, they had no choice but to decide for themselves what the weather would be like.

別解

Before people even knew what a weather forecast was, the only thing they could do was judge for themselves how the weather might change.

In those days, weather forecasts did not exist.
In those days, people did not even have a word for weather forecasts.

People had to judge the weather while they were by themselves.
People had to decide for themselves what the weather would be like.

had no choice but の後ろを動名詞にする

People had no choice but judging the future weather.
People had no choice but to judge what the weather would be like.

had no choice but の後ろは to不定詞です。

not even have a word for ...even で「さえ」を正確に出します
before the term ... was knownterm
have no speaking of ...
have no choice but to V選択肢がないことを明確に表します
what the weather would be like未来の状態を節で表せます
how the weather might change変化に焦点を置く説明です

  • 「風を読む」は read the wind と比喩を保てますが、learn how to read とすれば技能の内容が明確です
  • watched と learned を and で結び、must have を両方にかけます

現在から昔を推測しているため、must watch ではなく must have watched とします。

So they must have watched the sky carefully and learned how to read the wind.

別解

For that reason, people must have studied what they saw in the sky and tried hard to understand what the wind was telling them.

So people must watch the sky carefully in those days.
So people must have watched the sky carefully in those days.

People must have looked the sky carefully.
People must have looked at the sky carefully.

People must have read letters written on the wind.
People must have learned how to read the wind.

understand what the wind was telling themwhat

  • 「言葉が豊か」は words are rich と直訳せず、many words for ...
  • 天気に関わる内容は how the weather changes と how 節に開けます
That is probably why ...
  • the language has so many words

That is probably why the language has so many words for how the weather changes

That is probably why the language has so many words for how the weather changes.

別解

That is probably why we still have so many words that tell us how the weather is changing.

Words about the weather are rich because people watched the sky.
That is probably why there are so many words for the weather.

言葉の種類が多いという内容を、there are so many words の形で表します。

This explains why there are many words for the weather.
This probably explains why there are many words for the weather.

have many words for ...
there are many different ways to describe ...
This probably explains why ...
That is probably why ...
Because of that bad cause

Whether it rains too little or too much, rain can cause trouble. In the days when people did not even have a word for weather forecasts, they had no choice but to decide for themselves what the weather would be like. So they must have watched the sky carefully and learned how to read the wind. That is probably why the language has so many words for how the weather changes.

whether ... or ... what the weather would be like は過去から見た先の天気なので would です。 how to read、how the weather changes、what the weather would be like

Too little rain can be harmful, and too much can be harmful as well. Before people even knew what a weather forecast was, they could only use their own eyes and decide how the weather might change. They must therefore have looked carefully at what was happening in the sky and tried to learn what the wind could tell them. This is probably why there are so many words for how the weather changes.

whether や had no choice が出ない場合は、二文に分けて too little / too much を繰り返し、could only use their own eyes と説明できます。風を読むも learn what the wind could tell them と擬人的な what 節にしました。最後を This is probably why ...
