続く「知識と知恵の宝庫」は難しい比喩語を探さず、how much knowledge and wisdom the books contain と節に開けます。

  • Some people say that で他人の意見を囲みます
  • what they do not know
  • 検索するは search the Internet、答えを探すは find an answer と役割を分けます
  • because の理由が books are no longer needed にかかるようにします
but that is a serious mistake

what they do not know と what they want to know を使えば、anything の範囲も明確です。 Some people say と They therefore think の枠に理由と結論を収め、その後の but で初めて筆者の反論へ移ります。

訳例
標準

Some people say that whenever they find something they do not understand, they can search the Internet and quickly find an answer to what they want to know. They therefore think that books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries are no longer needed, but that is a serious mistake.

別解

Some people believe we no longer need encyclopedias or dictionaries because an Internet search seems to tell us what we want to know at once. They are badly mistaken.

We can search Internet whenever we need an answer.
We can search the Internet whenever we need an answer.

We can search an answer on the Internet.
We can search for an answer on the Internet.

We no longer need encyclopedias because the Internet gives us every answer.
Some people say we no longer need encyclopedias because the Internet gives us answers.

Books such as encyclopedia and dictionary are no longer needed.
Books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries are no longer needed.

The Internet always gives everyone a correct answer immediately.
Some people think they can quickly find an answer to anything on the Internet.

search for an answer online探す物には for を置きます
be no longer needed受け身で自然です
we do not need ... anymore人を主語にした平易な形です
books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries大きな分類の books の後ろに、複数形の具体例を置く安全な形です
encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference books参照する書物という共通点を明示する別解です
books like an encyclopedia and a dictionary特定の一冊ずつを例示するように聞こえ、この一般論には合いにくいので使いません

  • 今ようやくは only now / at last で遅い気づきを示します

We are only now realizing how much ... these books contain

Only now are we beginning to realize how much knowledge and wisdom these books actually contain and what they can still teach us.

別解

We have at last begun to understand that these books hold a great store of knowledge and show us how people have thought about the world.

These books contain a great deal of knowledges and wisdom.
These books contain a great deal of knowledge and wisdom.

We realize how much knowledge do these books contain.
We realize how much knowledge these books contain.

do these books contain

We realize that these books contain much knowledge and wisdom.
We are only now realizing that these books contain much knowledge and wisdom.

how much knowledge and wisdom the books contain比喩を節で説明できます
a great store of knowledge and wisdomstore
only now begin to realize遅い気づきが明確です
at last understand平易な別解です

  • 編集した人々は the people who put them together と平易に言えます
  • 「想像を絶する」は more effort than we can imagine と比較で開きます
  • 感謝する対象は人なので be grateful to people です
  • あらためては once again / with new respect で示します

efforts beyond imagination のように固めず、we understand how hard the editors worked と節にすれば、努力の大きさと感謝の理由が一直線になります。 the people who put them together

We also feel grateful once again to the people who put them together when we understand how hard they worked and how much effort the task required.

別解

This makes us thank their editors again, for they did far more work than we can imagine to decide what should go into each book.

We are grateful to the books for their great effort.
We are grateful to the people who edited the books for their great effort.

The editors made an effort that could not imagine the task.
The editors made more effort than we can imagine.

more effort than we can imagine

more effort than we can imagine比較で意味を開けます
how hard the editors worked人の動作として説明できます
feel grateful once again to ...
thank ... again with new respect以前とは違う理解を持って感謝することを説明できます
renew our appreciation for ...

Some people say that whenever they find something they do not understand, they can search the Internet and quickly find an answer to what they want to know. They therefore think that books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries are no longer needed, but that is a serious mistake. Only now are we beginning to realize how much knowledge and wisdom these books actually contain and what they can still teach us. We also feel grateful once again to the people who put them together when we understand how hard they worked and how much effort the task required.

他人の主張を say と think の中に置き、but that is a serious mistake から筆者の反論へ明確に切り替えました。what they want to know、how much knowledge、what they can teach us、how hard、how much effort

Some people believe we do not need encyclopedias or dictionaries anymore. They say that when we do not know something, an Internet search can immediately tell us what we want to know. This idea is quite wrong. We are only now learning how much these books know about the world, how carefully their information was chosen, and what kinds of wisdom they have saved for us. When we see how much work was needed to make them, we become thankful again to all the people who edited them.

「宝庫」は books know about the world と少し人のように表しながら、その後に information と wisdom を明示しています。
